Tax-Free Income

Is 4.0% tax-free income worth the risk?

It is possible that municipal bonds represent an attractive investment opportunity. Their interest rates approximately equal, or exceed, interest rates on treasury bonds. This relatively high tax-exempt interest, in our opinion, will only get more attractive as the Bush tax cuts expire this year and personal income taxes rise. Given the financial commitments made by Big Government, we doubt that tax rates of any type will do anything but expand. Under these circumstances, a stream of income exempt from government income taxes could prove exceptionally valuable.
